Compared to ordinary strand wire ropes, wire ropes made from compacted strands have a higher breaking strength. The compacted strands allow for better contact between the wire rope and pulleys. Furthermore, the large metal surface area of the outer strands makes compacted strands more wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant. When used on multi-layer winding drums, the smooth surface of the compacted strands ensures that adjacent strands do not scratch or damage the wire rope due to mutual friction. This characteristic makes surface-contact (compacted strand) wire ropes more suitable for multi-layer winding applications.
