Wire ropes, as an important lifting tool, require maintenance and upkeep to ensure their safe and reliable use. Proper maintenance and upkeep can extend the service life of wire ropes and ensure work safety. Below, let Gn Ocean Engineering guide you through the maintenance methods for wire ropes.

1. During use, prevent wire ropes from becoming looped, twisted, bent, or sticking to debris, and prevent friction with machinery or other foreign objects.

2. After the tower crane is installed (before use), the wire rope should be lubricated with a layer of graphite grease. Subsequent lubrication should follow the “Crane Lubrication Chart”.

3. The overall design of tower cranes does not allow for an indefinite service life for wire ropes. Wire ropes should be scrapped under any of the following conditions:

a. For 6×19－d wire ropes (d being the wire rope diameter), more than 5 wires are broken within a 6d length, or more than 10 wires are broken within a 30d length.

b. For 6×37－d wire ropes (d being the wire rope diameter), more than 10 wires are broken within a 6d length, or more than 19 wires are broken within a 30d length.

c. Wire ropes that are tightly packed together should be scrapped, even if the number of broken wires within a 6d length does not exceed 5.

d. Although there are no broken wires, if the wire rope wear reaches 40% of its diameter, or the wire rope is reduced by 7% or more relative to its nominal diameter, or the wire rope is significantly bent, etc.

e. The wire rope loses its normal shape and becomes deformed, such as wavy, cage-like distortion, strand extrusion, wire extrusion, localized increase in rope diameter, kinking, localized decrease in rope diameter, partial flattening, or bending.

f. The wire rope diameter has been subjected to special thermal effects, resulting in a identifiable color change on the outside.

Note: When hoisting molten or incandescent metal, acid solutions, explosives, or flammable materials, the number of broken wires in the scrapped wire rope is halved. For situations not mentioned in this manual, the provisions of GB5972 shall apply.
